4 Toning Water Exercises Everyone Can Do

After we started our family, I lost the excess body fat from the pregnancy pretty quickly by exercising. But I wasn’t satisfied. My body just didn’t look as tight as it had before. I started looking for ways to tone my body. Aqua aerobics had been a great way to work out, and now I focused on using it to tighten up and regain muscle definition.

What exactly is aqua aerobics? I’ve come to think of water workouts as my gym in the water. Everything I want to do in the gym – I can accomplish in the water. Simply put, aqua aerobics is doing an exercise that makes my body work hard enough to get a cardiovascular benefit – the aerobics part. If I get in the water and get moving, it qualifies as aqua aerobics. Here are some great resources I’ve found with more information:

Some people who don’t know how to swim might think they can’t enjoy water exercise. I’ve done whole hour long water aerobics classes and never gotten my shoulder length hair wet, so yes, you can do aqua aerobics if you can’t swim. I like a variety of water exercises, but here are 4 that really help with toning my body:

Aqua walking. I go to my community pool when the lap lanes are open, and begin moving up and down one with a good walking posture. This is where you quickly find out the water benefit of resistance. It takes extra effort to push my body through the water, which is great for toning my stomach and leg muscles. I wear old ratty tennis shoes to protect my feet, and keep a water bottle at the end of the lane to stay hydrated.

Leg lifts. I really needed extra work after the pregnancy to get my stomach back in shape. But I don’t much like crunches. So I fold a towel lengthwise and lay it on the side of the pool, in water deep enough where my feet won’t touch the bottom. If you can’t swim, just get in the pool at the shallow end, and work your way to your towel, holding on to the side. I turn facing out and spread my arms on the towel. Then I lift my legs with my knees bent, and when they are parallel to my waist, I extend my lower legs out as straight as I can. I did 10 reps to start, and worked my way up to 3 sets of 15 reps. I quickly saw more tone in my stomach.

Work with a kickboard. This one is pretty simple. I start in the shallow end of the pool, with the kickboard in front of me. I kick my legs hard to tone lower leg muscles as I move back and forth across the lap lane or shallow end. I try to keep my body as close to the surface as I can, which challenges both my abs and legs. Another way to do it is lay on my back, holding the kickboard to my chest, and kick back and forth. This creates a different exertion for the abs and legs.

Group water aerobics class. For a great way to give my body a tone, working both arms and legs, I will go to a group workout. These are wonderful when I don’t want to think about what to do, but just have someone lead me. I know I’m going to get a solid overall workout, and a great cardiovascular boost.
